Why Not?

So the last few weeks have been amazing. I reunited with some old friends, and I've been able to make some new ones. Here are a few photos that from the last month:

My best friend Ryan and I in one of the many taxicab rides we took during my 6 day stay in New York City this past June. I missed him terribly, and it was so nice to reconnect with someone I consider to be my soul mate.

Asli,Matt Embree, and I after Matt's band, RX Bandits, played their final Houston show ever. His band changed the way I felt about music and I will forever be grateful to him for that.

I decided to get a weave for a wedding I went to 2-3 weeks ago. Worst decision ever. I don't think I have  ever been in so much pain. Needless to say the hair extensions only lasted 18 hours.

My friend Ross recently asked me if I'd be interested in auditioning for "The Amazing Race" with him. I love this show and figured why the hell not? It's the chance of a lifetime, and a chance a million bucks. They probably won't pick us, but if they do, how cool would that be?

We leave for the casting call in Dallas next Friday. Wish us luck! Hope all of you are having a wonderful, adventure-filled summer.

off living

Let's just say that I've been busy having the time of my life. Photos to come.

So after 3 weeks of rentals, the guys at the body shop say I'll be getting my car back tomorrow!  Let me just say the cost of rentals was starting to get super expensive! I thought I had coverage for it, but I didn't.Getting my car back will be a big end to a long month of accidents, break ups, and other unnecessary stress.

After everything I've gone through in the past few weeks, it has really started to take a toll on my body. I've been super stressed, and have completely neglected regular exercise. This morning I signed up for a guaranteed spot in the Aramco Houston Half Marathon. I've done 5k's before, but I've never ran anything over five miles. This race is not until next January, so I look forward to training and  tackling this longtime goal. My coworker Virginia is getting pretty good at cracking the exercise whip, so I'm going for a 3 mile starter run with her after work.

It seems like whenever a series of bad things happen, good things are soon to come:

  • Summerfest this weekend(I'll be playing a few times)
  • The return of my best friend Ryan Ramirez to Texas
  • My trip to New York to go see him and my friend Jesse
  • My 2 week vacation from work
  • Endless runs with me and new music blaring in my ears

What do you have coming up?

Everything happens for a reason

The last few weeks have been pretty insane, but things are looking up. I got approved for my apartment, and I move in on Friday. My car should be fixed (hopefully) by next week, and I just completed a successful series of shows and recordings. Over the next few weeks, I'm looking forward to seeing my baby brother graduate high school, exercising the stress away, and counting down to my 2 week vacation from work. Things with the ex could be better, but it is what it is. Overall, I'm blessed, happy, and looking forward to the things to come.

Unravel

In just under a month, my whole life has changed.

I recently ended a 2 year relationship,I managed to get into 2 car accidents in 2 days, and lost an old friend. I'm a little stressed over all of this, but everything always seems to work out. My friend Rebecca's memorial is this upcoming Saturday and her family has asked me to sing "Unravel" by Bjork. Originally, Becca wanted me to sing it at her wedding (which occurred last year unfortunately),but her parents weren't big on the lyrical content.

Strangely, the lyrics are so fitting now:

while you are away

my heart comes undone
slowly unravels
in a ball of yarn
the devil collects it
with a grin
our love
in a ball of yarn
he'll never return it
so when you come back
we'll have to make new love

I hope that I'm able to push through and sing the entire thing without crying. Funerals are the biggest challenge I feel for any performer(especially when the person is someone you know). If you haven't seen the video before, I've included it below. Have a great week ya'll.

I'll try to update more frequently with less morbid news :(

I like it so you don't have to

Do you have anything that others find lame? A song, a movie, a artwork that only you feel is art? To me, that thing is ska music.

Brief history from the wiki:

Ska . Jamaican [skja]) is a music genre that originated in Jamaica in the late 1950s, and was the precursor to rocksteady and reggae.[1] Ska combined elements of Caribbean mento and calypso with American jazz and rhythm and blues. It is characterized by a walking bass line accented with rhythms on the upbeat. In the early 1960s, ska was the dominant music genre of Jamaica and was popular with British mods. Later it became popular with many skinheads.Music historians typically divide the history of ska into three periods: the original Jamaican scene of the 1960s (First Wave), the English 2 Tone ska revival of the late 1970s (Second Wave) and the third wave ska movement, which started in the 1980s (Third Wave) and rose to popularity in the US in the 1990s.

Since high school I have been a part of 3 ska bands. The Blue Lights, Heptic Skeptic, and my newest The Suffers.

While it's not the most popular genre of music, it is one of my favorites because it never fails to cheer me up. In face over the last 5 years, every time I've gone through a breakup, the song that got me through everything was a ska song.

This weekend I will be attending the Community Records block party in New Orleans that will feature tons of new and old ska bands. The highlight for me will be seeing one of my favorite ex-ska bands RX Bandits. Over the years they slowly progressed into the progressive rock world and made a decent name for themselves. Recently, they decided to end the band to pursue new ventures. so this weekend will be a particularly special one for me.

So what do you love most in the world, that those that surround you can't stand?

Free

I love free stuff.Free food, free booze, anything free is cool with me.

I found out today that due to all the NCAA Final Four action going on in Houston this week, Discovery Green park will be having a FREE concert series Friday-Sunday featuring Sublime, Kings of Leon, and Kenny Chesney.

While I'm not the biggest Chesney fan, I grew up listening to Sublime, and love Kings of Leon. This recent concert announcement will make for a fantastic date for Eric and I because  the weekend weather is predicted to be amazing. I'll try to post photos of all the fun!

Happy Hump Day!
